Onemast

At sea with a one-mast ship

The one-mast ship is a ship design with money constraints in mind. It is much smaller in comparison to the frigate, and has no cannons for defense. This ship is also not designed for rowing, forcing the crew to trust that the winds will carry them where they need to go. Thus, these ships are for the adventurer with a smaller budget who nonetheless has to embark on sea travel.

During the time of Ultima VII, only these ships were encountered due to engine limitations. Also, the Avatar managed to reveal a scandal surrounding shipbuilder Owen, who'd built badly-constructed ships of this design.

This ship class is also encountered on the Serpent Isle in Ultima VII Part Two.

Lore[]

Ships may be purchased from shipwrights in nearly any coastal city. By Britannian law no ship is considered to be legally held unless the owner has in his possession that ship's deed of sale.

Trivia[]

  • In Ultima VII Part Two, the party is unable to use a ship, explained by the Teleport Storms having destroyed all ships, except one. The exception is the one ship that can only be commanded by Captain Hawk.
  • Strangely enough, the Avatar's ship in the intro is a frigate, while in-game it is a one-mast ship.
