A rod that confers one of the Marks, as seen in the shareware port of Ultima III
The Marks are powerful magical brandmarks in Ultima III, needed to finish the game.
The Marks can be obtained by touching special hot rods inside dungeons. The hot rods are usually found in the lowest levels of the dungeons, and each rod will give a character one of four different Marks. Touching a rod will also deliver 50 points of damage to the character. Each Mark has a special power that is granted to the character for the rest of the game.
The inhabitants of Devil Guard gave the Stranger several clues about the Marks.
The available Marks are:
- Mark of Kings: Allows Lord British to advance a character past the 5th level. Found in the Perinian Depths, the Dungeon of Time and the Dungeon of Fire.
- Mark of Fire: Allows safe walking over lava. Found in the Perinian Depths, the Dungeon of Fire and the Mines of Morinia.
- Mark of Force: Allows safe passage of force fields. Found in the Dungeon of Fire and Mt. Doom.
- Mark of the Snake: Allows passing the Great Earth Serpent, provided one has the password. Found in the Snake Dungeon. Clues about this Mark can be found in Fawn.
