Kalen is one of the sailors that originally arrived on the Serpent Isle with the Fellowship expedition. He actually does know the true purpose of the Fellowship. In fact, he actually is a pirate.
In Ultima VII Part Two, the Avatar first met him in the Fellowship Camp, but he had little to say. Finally, Batlin tried to get rid of the Avatar, who at the moment was in Fawn, by sending Kalen as an assassin to kill the hero. However, Kalen failed. Even when dying, Kalen gloated that the Avatar would never be able to stop Batlin, before perishing.
Jorvin promised to investigate the attack, but nothing came out of it.
Note: In Ultima 8 Kalen is referenced in books and possible misnamed Keldan by the Researcher Bentic and this reference includes two possible spouse Ariel or a bethrothed Daughter of Kean/Darion? named Celidia or Cecilida
