Bolinard is an Outcast who'd been taken prisoner by Tyball.
The Avatar freed him from Tyball's prison on the seventh level of the Abyss in Ultima Underworld I after slaying the evil mage. Bolinard offered to draw the Avatar a map of the immediate surroundings on the back of an old picture. The map proved to be of little use, however, the picture was, as it was of Tom, the love of the old mage Judy.
Later, Garamon rescued him when the volcano erupted.
